What is EPF?

EPF is a retirement savings scheme for salaried employees in India. Both employee and employer contribute 12% of basic salary each month.

Can I withdraw EPF before retirement?

Partial withdrawals are allowed for medical, home purchase, or education. Full withdrawal is permitted after 2 months of unemployment.

What is EPS?

Of the employer's 12% contribution, 8.33% goes to EPS (pension) and 3.67% to EPF corpus. EPS provides a pension after 10 years of service.

Is EPF interest taxable?

Contributions up to ₹2.5 Lakhs/year earn tax-free interest. Above ₹2.5L per year is taxed at income slab rate from FY 2021-22 onwards.

What is VPF?

Voluntary Provident Fund allows contributing beyond 12%. Interest earned within the ₹2.5L annual contribution cap remains tax-free.

When is EPF withdrawal tax-free?

EPF withdrawal is fully tax-free after 5 continuous years of service. Before 5 years, TDS applies.

What happens to EPF when I change jobs?

Transfer your EPF to the new employer using UAN online. This ensures continuity and tax-free status.

Can I check my EPF balance online?

Yes. Log in to epfindia.gov.in with your UAN to view passbook, withdraw, or transfer your EPF.

What is the EDLI benefit?

EDLI provides life insurance up to ₹7 Lakhs to the nominee of an EPF member who dies while in service.

Can I contribute to both EPF and NPS?

Yes. EPF is mandatory for eligible employees; NPS is voluntary. NPS gives an additional ₹50,000 deduction under 80CCD(1B).
