Can I claim HRA if I pay rent to my parents?

Yes, you can pay rent to parents and claim HRA, but you need a registered rent agreement, and your parents must declare the rental income in their ITR.

What cities are Metro for HRA?

Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, and Chennai are Metro (50% of Basic). All other cities are non-metro (40% of Basic).

Do I need rent receipts to claim HRA?

Yes. For annual rent above ₹1 Lakh, you must also provide the landlord's PAN to your employer.

Can I claim HRA and home loan interest together?

Yes, if the property is under construction or in a different city. HRA for rent + home loan interest for your own property can both be claimed.

Is HRA available under the New Tax Regime?

No. HRA exemption is only available under the Old Tax Regime. Under the New Regime, only the standard deduction of ₹75,000 is available.

Is HRA calculated on Basic or Gross salary?

For tax exemption, HRA is calculated on Basic + Dearness Allowance (DA) only, not gross salary.

What is Form 12BB for HRA?

Form 12BB is a declaration form you submit to your employer along with rent receipts so they can account for HRA exemption while computing monthly TDS.

Can a self-employed person claim HRA?

No. HRA exemption is exclusively for salaried individuals. Self-employed professionals may claim rent as a business expense under a different section.

What if my rent exceeds the HRA exemption limit?

The excess rent (above the exemption) remains taxable. You may want to negotiate a higher HRA component in your salary structure.

What is the minimum rent for maximum HRA benefit?

To maximise benefit, your annual rent should exceed 10% of your basic salary. For ₹50,000 basic/month, your rent should exceed ₹5,000/month.
