What is NPS?
NPS is a voluntary retirement savings scheme regulated by PFRDA. It builds a corpus providing a lump sum and monthly pension at retirement.
What is the NPS annuity?
At retirement, at least 40% of corpus must buy an annuity. Remaining 60% can be withdrawn as a tax-free lump sum.
What tax benefits does NPS offer?
Old Regime: ₹1.5L under 80CCD(1) + ₹50K extra under 80CCD(1B). Employer NPS up to 10% of salary allowed under 80CCD(2) in both regimes.
What is the expected NPS return?
Equity-heavy NPS funds have returned 10-12% since inception. Conservative allocation returns 7-9%.
How is NPS different from EPF?
EPF is mandatory for salaried employees with fixed interest. NPS is voluntary with market-linked returns and greater investment flexibility.
Can I withdraw from NPS before 60?
Partial withdrawal (up to 25% of own contributions) is allowed after 3 years for home, education, or critical illness. Early exit requires 80% into annuity.
What are Tier I and Tier II NPS accounts?
Tier I is the mandatory pension account with lock-in till 60 with tax benefits. Tier II is a voluntary savings account with no lock-in but no tax deductions.
What is PRAN?
PRAN (Permanent Retirement Account Number) is a unique 12-digit identifier for your NPS account, valid for life regardless of employer changes.
What is the annuity rate in NPS?
Current annuity rates range from 5.5–7% per year depending on the insurer and plan type chosen at retirement.
Is NPS good for FIRE planning?
NPS has a lock-in until 60, so it's less suitable for early retirees. For retirement at 60+, the NPS tax benefits make it an excellent supplemental tool.
